cherry.aabox.com stabilitiy issues 5/4/07

If your virtual account is on cherry.aabox.com, you may have noticed slow page loading and/or timeouts as well as several mysql problems in the last 24 hours.

The problems with the machines stability were due to two issues. First, cpanel updated from version 10 to 11. There was a bug in cpanel that caused several processes to run uncontrolled, eating up 90-99% of CPU. The cpanel bug only affected one of our virtual servers, so the upgrade was seamless for all other virtual customers.

Simultaneously, the server was hit with a huge amount of spam starting that same day, causing extremely high loads from the mail server. Our spam filtering system was overwhelmed temporarily until we could pre-filter a lot of the traffic.

We have resolved both issues as of today 5/5/07 and the machine is now stable and running normally.
